Use important nonverbal communications.
Using these tips is key to showing respect and to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with dementia—and may be more important than verbal communication
Smile and be at ease. The message being conveyed is one of trust and respect.
Notice your facial cues. Avoid furrowing your brows, rolling your eyes, or gritting your teeth. These are disrespectful, raise doubts, and inhibit social engagement.
Touch the person with dementia in a soft, gentle, and friendly manner. This maintains the social connection and connotes trust and your belief in personhood
Sit at the same level as the person with dementia. Interacting at the same physical level enhances relationships.
