When we started Blessings! For Seniors Companion Care in 2005, one of our purposes was to be actively involved in the community. We encourage others in the community to give back some of their time and talents to assist the underserved. After all that’s what makes a community a community.
I was recently given a book titled “Stories From The Road….Stories Of The Heart”, a collection of stories about personal experiences written by volunteer drivers from across the country.
Over the next few months, I will share stories that touched my heart and I encourage each of you to also share your own stories about being involved in your own communities and how it has impacted your own life.
“Thanks and a Prayer”
As an RSVP Provide-a-Ride driver, I have the opportunity to meet many nice people. One woman in particular stands out in my mind. While we were driving, we chatted about our families. I mentioned that my grandson is currently serving in the army and has been in Iraq for several months. We talked about it a little, and then went on to discuss other things.
When it was time for me to drop her off after her appointment, she asked if I would mind if she said a prayer for my grandson. I told her I would be honored. Even though she can barely stand, we stood together for about 3 minutes while she offered prayers for my grandson, his unit, and all of our soldiers. She even asked me for the correct spelling of his name so she could ask her church group to pray for him as well. I have since driven her to several appointments and she told me how the group at her church continues to pray for the safe return of my grandson.
And I thought I was supposed to be helping her.
