Stories From the Road-The People I Meet

(“Stories From the Road…Stories of the Heart” is about the personal experiences of over 200 volunteer drivers across America and how the simple act of driving someone in need touches their own hearts)

In the past four years I have had a variety of riders and a few recognizable names as I start to get assigned some repeat customers. What I like best about driving is meeting the variety of people who so desperately want to maintain their independence. These are people who have had rich lives and enjoy sharing a bit of their experience in exchange for a lift.

I have met retired teachers, a Rabbi, a musician, widows and grandparents. They are from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and diverse geographies. Their bodies may not work as smoothly as they once did, but their minds are full of memories, insights and experiences. They are all so appreciative when I feel I have done so little.

They may not know it but they inspire me in ways that can’t be defined. My days are richer on the days I drive. And for this I have them to thank.
