Stories From the Road…..What Goes Around Comes Around

(“Stories From the Road…Stories of the Heart” is about the personal experiences of over 200 volunteer drivers across America and how the simple act of driving someone in need touches their own hearts)

It’s hard to put it in one or two paragraphs how this driving has changed my life, but here goes. Riders, as you call them, think of us as angels, but they do not realize how they change our lives. I’ve become a better listener as some of the riders have no one to talk to, and by the time your trip is over you know their history. Where they were born, all about their family, they love to visit with you, and sometimes they even confide in you, or ask your opinion on a problem. I don’t find myself complaining too much, as most of them are much worse off than I am. Most riders are very sick, but they want to be treated with dignity and respect, and that is what we do.

Most of our riders end up adopting us, if they like you they want you and only you to take them. Also we always receive birthday cards, Christmas cards, ect. They make you feel so important in their lives. These are the benefits of volunteer driving or any kind of volunteer work. You are tired when you go to bed at night, but you feel good about yourself, and that you probably made somebody happy today by listening to them and treating them with kindness. I believe in what goes around comes around and I know someday I will need this service, and there will be someone there for me.
