Healthy aging requires more than diet and exercise. A comprehensive care plan also looks at your mom’s needs for socialization, hobbies that help her de-stress, and a clean, organized home that lowers her fall risk.
September is Healthy Aging Month. It’s a great time to talk about your mom’s care needs.
What Are Her Goals?
Your mom has a large farmhouse and lives all by herself. With so many floors and bedrooms, much of her house is unused. It’s time to ask her if she’s still comfortable with this situation or if she’d like more help keeping the home clean. You may find she’d rather downsize to avoid the costly heating and cooling bills she currently experiences.
If she wants to downsize, make sure she knows that moving will take some work. Plus, there are expenses like the moving van or truck, realtor commissions, and legal fees. If she’s hesitant, make sure she’s aware of other options, like renting out rooms to grandchildren or other family members.
Where Does She Currently Struggle With Self-Care?
What are your mom’s current struggles as she tries to complete daily routines? Does she find it difficult to do her laundry, clean the home, or walk without having someone to hold onto? Does your mom forget she has appointments or needs a ride to them?
Is your mom able to wash her hair and body, comb or brush her hair, and get dressed? Can she cook her own meals, build a shopping list, and go shopping without someone’s guidance?
It’s okay for your mom to admit she needs a helping hand. Make sure she knows that’s a common occurrence, and one you’ve been ready to help her plan for. Get a pad of paper and start taking notes.
Go over all the things she needs to do to live independently. When there is a task she can’t do on her own, mark it with a star. That’s where you’ll need someone to help. But, if you or another family member has time, great.
Once you’re done, you’ll have a list of items where no one is free to help. Those are the areas where an in-home caregiver can be a huge help.
If your mom has daily tasks she cannot do without your help, then it’s time to talk to her about the benefits of in-home care. All that in-home care aides can do to help her maintain her independence might surprise her.
Healthy Aging Month is the best time to sit down as a family and address your mom’s care needs. To be sure your mother’s care needs are never ignored by hiring in-home care. Without a doubt, she shouldn’t have to struggle with her daily routines, and in-home care ensures that happens.
