Stories From The Road (cont) “Counting Cheerios”

Real stories by volunteer drivers, from the book “Stories From The Road…Stories Of The Heart”

I received a request to go food shopping with a senior citizen who had previously relied on neighbors as she could not afford delivery. I found she was to weak to accompany me to the store and decided to establish a consistent schedule (every other week) to do her shopping. Three trips and six weeks later she asked to go along with me. She had gained 7 pounds and felt great.

Before I started helping, she rationed her food, literally counting Cheerios and putting them in plastic bags for each day to ensure she would not run out. Having a reliable shopping schedule allows her to eat regularly, regain her health and eventually push the shopping cart as I scan the aisles for her favorite brands.
